Join us for a spirited, energetic, participatory drumming and dance performance for all ages. Every Fall a group of some of the most talented performance artists from West Africa come to Urbana for Midwest Mandeng, a festival celebrating West African drum and dance. In this performance, some of our artists will share traditional rhythms and dances and introduce you to the arts and culture of Guinea and Mali. Featured performers at the festival will include Bolokada Conde, Youssouf Koumbassa, Moussa Traore, Djeneba Sako, Fode Bangoura, Marietou Camara, Abass Camara, and Djibril Camara. A free all-ages event.

How to Enter Your Project:
• Age categories are family (0 - 5 years); children (6 - 10); teen (11 – 14 years); and teen (15 - 18 years)
• Registration will open on September 1st. Last day to register is Wednesday, October 5th.
• Bring your project to the Library on Friday, October 7th (3:00 to 6:00 p.m.) or Saturday, October 8th (9:00 to 11:00 a.m.)
• Judging will take place 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. by a team of LEGO® enthusiasts
• Awards will be announced at 2:00 p.m.
• Public viewing begins after the award announcement from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• After the contest, please pick up your project on Saturday, October 8th (5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) or Sunday, October 9th (1:00 to 5:00 p.m.)

Rules:
• You may use LEGO®, DUPLO®, Mega Bloks®, or other LEGO® compatible plastic bricks.
• Entries will be judged on originality and must be your own creation (not a LEGO® designed kit or project found online, in a magazine, or a book).
• Your project must be on a base no bigger than 24 x 24 inches and can be wood, cardboard, or a LEGO® flat base.
• You may decorate your base to fit with your project. Your completed project may be no taller than four feet.
• Only one entry per participant or team (where applicable).
• Team projects will be categorized by the oldest participant on the team.
• Team participants may not submit individual entries (all members of a team will compete for a single prize).
• The Family category is for adults and children working together.
• Make a sign with the name of your project. Do not put your name anywhere on the project. Your project will be assigned a number for judging.

• Every winner will receive a prize!

The Tito Carrillo Quartet combines the sounds of jazz with the rhythms of Cuba and Puerto Rico to create an exciting brand of Latin jazz. Tito Carrillo is a professor of jazz trumpet at the University of Illinois and has performed and recorded with the likes of Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Phil Collins, and Quincy Jones.

Welcome to 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten - a year-round reading program for children ages birth to five years. It's the fun, exciting, and free way to start children on the path to success.

One of the most reliable predictors of school success is being read to during early childhood. The Library would like to help support you as you prepare your child for kindergarten. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.
