The End of Your Life Book Club

by Will Schwalbe

Will Schwalbe is sitting with his mother in the waiting room of a cancer treatment clinic shortly after her diagnosis, when he asks her what she’s reading. An ode to books, The End of Your Life Book Club is the chronicle of that conversation and the following months, in which mother and son create a book club for two, discussing the wide variety of books they've read, but also talking about life and anything else the reading provokes.

UFL Reads! our book club for adults, meets the fourth Sunday of most months.

From 3:00-4:00 p.m. during our regularly scheduled Teen Open Lab, Claire Happel, Jeremy Harting, and James Moore of the Noble Fowl Trio will present a performance of the Exquisite and Sonorous Corpses, a set of game pieces by John Cage, Henry Cowell, Lou Harrison, Virgil Thomson, and Frank Wigglesworth (arranged by James Moore). After the performance, participants will be given the opportunity to rearrange excerpts from the music in their own order to make new pieces to be played by the Trio.

The Exquisite and Sonorous Corpses were written based on a game used by French Surrealist artists and writers. One person starts the work and then conceals all or most of what they've drawn/written, and the next artist must do the same until it is passed around to everyone to form a piece with strong contrasts and playful juxtapositions.

This special program is paid for in part by a City of Urbana Public Arts Grant.

The sounds of ancient Eastern Sudan meet contemporary pop-rock in the shimmering, jazz-infused music of Otaak Band.

Ahmed Said is from the Beja, the indigenous community of south-eastern Egypt, eastern Sudan, and western Eritrea. He is a master of the Beja’s traditional lyre, the masankop, and the rich, powerful vocal style typical of Beja music. Miguel Merino (from Indiana) is a drummer and composer who sought to bring together their two distant, but deeply connected, styles of music.

This family-friendly concert is made possible by Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and the College of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Illinois.

Two words sum up this book for me...overly academic. I can't recommend it.
