Enjoy a selection of old and new favorites, picked especially by fellow book club members.

This month, we will read and discuss My Beloved World, the memoir written by Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic justice on the United States Supreme Court. This revealing memoir covers her life as a young girl in a Puerto Rican neighborhood of the South Bronx up to the time when she first became a judge in the early 1990s. Now, looking back, she counts “the blessings that have made me who I am, taking care not to lose sight of them, or of my best self, as I move forward.” [from the preface]

UFL Reads! our book club for adults, meets the fourth Sunday of most months.

    Winter's Tale

I picked up this audio book because I've wanted to read it for a very long time! It's a wonderful blend of New York fantasy and orphan frivolity. This is a Tale in every true sense of the word. Horses communicate, time warps and the characters are magical. It's a big book and truly a journey in words. The audio book narrator does a fine job and keeps the listener engaged.

Inside a Pearl: My Years in Paris
    Author
    Edmund White
    Rating

    Review
For me, a rating of three stars means "this book is worth reading". This book is not as fine as White's memoirs about his years in New York, but it does add detail to his persona. He writes beautifully and tranquilly about the most urgent topics...like a swell of water just carrying the reader along. I think he could write about reading the phone book and make it interesting. But, having complimented him, this book is too precious and self-satisfied to be one that I'd want to re-read...not like City Boy: My Life in New York During the 1960s and "70s.
